Speed reading is a sport at my house. Then again, ignoring housework is also a favorite pastime. I love, love, love to research the saints and themes for this newsletter. For every book we crack open to share with you, there are more on the stack we wish we coulda, woulda shoulda shared! The Road to Cana by Anne Rice Hey, if both Richard John Neuhaus and The New York Times Book Review can praise the same book, it must be worth taking a gander at...and it is. I interviewed Anne Rice last summer, as she was writing this novel. Do take a look... Joan of Arc: In Her Own Words, compiled and translated by Willard Trask In a recent visit with Advisory board member Sandra Miesel, I happened upon this volume as we were book shopping. Look for a historical sketch on this one soon! Fascinating! Last Things: Death and the Apocalypse in the Middle Ages, by Caroline Walker Bynum and Paul Freedman Dr. Walker Bynum is easily one of the finest medieval historians out there. I also intend to read Holy Fast, Holy Feast, on the Eucharist in medieval times, and The Resurrection of the Body. With a hat-tip again to Sandra, my personal book trainer. Truly Our Sister: A Theology of Mary in the Communion of Saints, by Elizabeth Johnson, C.S.J. Feminist theologian sets her sights on Mary in this one. Here's a scholar who is worth reading, even if you suspect that your views may diverge. It is always exciting to read well-written, passionate theology. The Book of All Saints, by Adrienne von Speyr Recently published by Ignatius, this book is really interesting...a compilation of von Speyr's visions of saints, and their personalities. Includes Edith Stein...and many others of note. Catholics are not obligated to believe in any personal visions of anyone, but these are insightful and worth thumbing through. (A nice one for your bedside table....read a few vignettes at a time...) |
