I'm a convert, and the lucky recipient of worthy books from Catholic friends over the years. The tome I have enjoyed the most is the Golden Legend by Jacobus de Voragine, a compilation of the medieval miracle stories of the saints. (Many thanks to Sandra Miesel, co-author of The DaVinci Hoax.)
Jacobus was a Dominican, and thus his collection was for the purpose of preaching. It's worth noting that Jacobus can only remember forty tales of saintly women, of which only five were married. Included are a fair number of amazing "cross-dressing" monk stories. The historical veracity of the following account is unlikely, but the underlying message that a good name can be restored with patient repentance rings true even today. |

A "tell all" retrospective on Graham Greene in the New York Times Book Review in 2005 tainted my opinion of Greene. Sure, I knew he was no saint. But according to the scribes in Gotham City, his lust was legendary and worthy of many words. His books were considered immoral by the Church back in the 1950's.
And yet the sinner wrote some powerful books. What happens when Jesus interferes in a love relationship? His book on two lovers in war-torn 1940's London, The End of the Affair, is an exploration of the relationship of religious passion and sexual passion. He must have known something of both? |

Long days And even longer nights I think time and again Something's not right Those tell tale signs Upon my face Grow more obvious It's time they trace And I think to myself My youth has gone by But then you come home And I see my beauty in your eyes.
Children are special Especially these God blesses these children With special needs. Days full of battles My will against yours It takes much of mine To not slam the doors The day often dissolves Into my own sobs and cries And then you come home And I see my strength in your eyes. The day gets started I'm already behind It's hard to get going I run out of time One more mess to clean More Laundry, more dishes My heart - It feels bitter and useless And just when I think Compassion and passions all lies That's when you come home And I see my love in your eyes.
